The Taxonomic Status of the White-tailed Kite

نویسنده

چکیده

AssraAcr.-The White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus) of the Americas has been merged with the Black-shouldered (or Black-winged) Kite (E. caeruleus) of the Old World and the Australian Black-shouldered Kite (E. axillaris) by North American authorities (but not elsewhere), primarily because of similarity in plumage. However, American kites differ from Old World kites in greater size and weight, in proportions (relatively longer tail and smaller bill and feet), plumage pattern (particularly of juveniles), and in behavior. Here we argue that these characters are sufficiently distinctive to warrant recognition of E. leucurus at the species level. Received 19 May 1992. accepted I Sept. 1992.

Prioritizing species conservation: does the Cape Verde kite exist?

The Cape Verde kite (Milvus milvus fasciicauda) is considered to be one of the rarest birds of prey in the world and at significant risk of extinction. For this reason there is great interest in both the taxonomic and the population status of this group. To help resolve its taxonomic status, we provide phylogenetic analyses based on three mitochondrial genes for a sampling of kites in the genus...

Taxonomic status of the Turcinoemacheilus populations (Nemachilidae) of the Gaveh River using the COI gene

This conducted to study the taxonomic status of the Turcinoemacheilus populations from the Gaveh River drainage, a part of the Tigris River basin, sampled in 2016, using the COI gene and morphometric characters, since provided morphological and colouration feature could not resolve its identification. For this purpose, after sampling DNA of specimens were extracted using phenol-chloroform metho...

Systematics and conservation of the hook-billed kite including the island taxa from Cuba and Grenada

Taxonomic uncertainties within the genus Chondrohierax stem from the high degree of variation in bill size and plumage coloration throughout the geographic range of the single recognized species, hook-billed kite Chondrohierax uncinatus. These uncertainties impede conservation efforts as local populations have declined throughout much of its geographic range from the Neotropics in Central Ameri...

Taxonomic status of six populations of the Gobiids (Teleost, Gobiidae) in the southern Caspian Sea basin using COI gene

Morphological similarities of the populations and species of the genus Ponticola in the southern Caspian Sea make their identification difficult based on the provided keys. Molecular markers are used as a supplementary tools to better understanding of the fishes’ taxonomic statues. This study was conducted to understand taxonomic statues of gobiids from 6 rivers (Siah, Zaringol, Babol, Tajan, S...
